Age requirements for drivers

Your age and the country where your trip originates determine if you're eligible to drive on Turo, if you must pay a young driver fee, and if you can book high-value vehicles. 

You must be 18 or older to book a trip in the US. We apply the following additional age requirements, vehicle restrictions, and fees based on your age at the time you book a trip, not the age you’ll be when the trip takes place. 

• You must be 21 or older to book a car with a total market value of more than $20k
• You must be 25 or older to book a Deluxe Class car
• You must be 30 or older to book a Super Deluxe Class car or a specialty vehicle

• If you’re 18-21, you can’t decline a protection plan — choose between the Minimum protection plan or the Standard protection plan only
• If you’re 18-20, you’ll pay a minimum Young driver fee of $50/day 
• If you’re 21–24, you’ll pay a minimum Young driver fee of $30/day 

You must be 21 or older to book a trip in Australia. We apply the following additional age requirements, vehicle restrictions, and fees based on your age at the time you book a trip, not the age you’ll be when the trip takes place. 

• You must be 25 or older to book a Deluxe Class
• You must be 30 or older to book a Super Deluxe Class car
• If you’re 21-24, you must pay a Young driver fee of A$15/day 

You must be 23 or older to book a trip in Canada. We apply the following additional age requirements and vehicle restrictions based on your age at the time you book a trip, not the age you’ll be when the trip takes place. 

• You must be 25 or older to book a Deluxe Class car
• You must be 30 or older to book a Super Deluxe Class car or a specialty vehicle 

You must be at least 21 but no older than 74 to book a car in the UK. We apply the following additional age requirements, vehicle restrictions, and fees based on your age at the time you book a trip, not the age you’ll be when the trip takes place. 

• You must be 25 or older to book a Deluxe Class car
• You must be 30 or older to book a Super Deluxe Class car
• If you’re under the age of 25, you can only book cars identified as Group 1-16 vehicles by the Association of British Insurers, and you must pay a minimum £25/day Young driver fee

I want to book a car that has an age restriction. I’ll be the required age when the trip starts. Why won’t it let me book the car?

You must be the required age for a vehicle at the time that you book your trip. Even if you have a birthday before the trip starts or while the trip is in progress, you won’t be able to book the car in advance. We’re unable to make any exceptions.  

I’ll be having a birthday before my trip starts and will no longer qualify as a young driver. Why do I have to pay a Young driver fee?

Unless you are age 25 at the time you book your trip, you must still pay the Young driver fee. That’s true even if you’ll have a birthday before the trip starts or while the trip is in progress. We can’t prorate or refund a portion of the fee. 

How old do I have to be for someone to add me as a driver on their trip?

As long as a driver creates a Turo account, gets approved to drive, and meets the age requirements above in the country of the booked trip, the primary driver can request to have them added as a driver on the trip.

Can I have the Young driver fee waived?

Neither Turo or nor your host can waive the Young driver fee. We don’t offer discounts or waivers for Young driver fees based on your personal insurance, driving record, automobile club affiliation, or other group memberships.  

I’m old enough to book a car, but the system won’t let me. What can I do?

Check the value of the vehicle, as guests in the US who are ages 18-20 can’t book a car that has a total market value of more than $20,000.
